Marco Movie Review

January 1, 2025

Marco is a smash hit in Malayalam and has made big numbers. The Telugu version has hit the screens today and features Unni Mukundan in a lead role. Haneed Adeni is the director of this film which has music by Ravi Basrur. Read our review here.

When Victor(Ishaan Shoukath), a blind man, is tragically killed by the son of a wealthy industrialist, it ignites turmoil within a sprawling gold dynasty. Marco(Unni Mukundan), Victor’s formidable brother, swears vengeance and is determined to bring justice to those responsible. However, Marco’s greatest challenge lies closer than he realizes as his adversaries are hidden in plain sight, mingling within his circle. How Marco handles these crunch situations is the basic story of the film.

Performances

Unni Mukundan is the heart and soul of the film. His transformation is the major asset of Marco and he delivers a solid performance as Marco. More than the performance, it is his style that Unni Mukundan carries and wins us over. The swagger and style with which the action is choreographed is quite cool. The rest of the cast is relatively new and has done a good job.

Technical Aspects

Ravi Basrur’s music score elevates the movie to next level. Although it is loud in certain parts, it effectively sets the tone, enhancing the audience’s experience through exceptional sound design. The film’s production values are good, and the cinematography is impressive. A distinct tone has been applied, perfectly complementing the film’s gritty and gory theme.

The Telugu dubbing is clean and does not disrupt the viewing experience. The action choreography deserves special mention, with stylish and innovative fight sequences that feel fresh for Malayalam cinema. While some action scenes and build-up moments may remind viewers of Prashanth Neel’s films, they are executed well and add to the overall appeal.

Analysis

Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni, introduces a straightforward story set in a fresh backdrop for Malayalam cinema. The core theme of the film is to present an intense, no-holds-barred narrative filled with bloodshed. In this regard, Marco delivers effectively. However, when it comes to storytelling, the film feels somewhat routine and lacks excitement.

The emotional depth required for the characters is missing, as action takes precedence over emotion. A significant flaw lies in the portrayal of Marco’s character—his relentless pursuit of vengeance and unyielding drive could have been explored more thoroughly. The film features multiple characters, but their introductions are not well-developed, which may confuse viewers who do not closely follow the plot.

Marco draws heavy inspiration from KGF. The hero’s grand entrance, laid-back demeanor, and overall presentation reflect Prashanth Neel’s style, adapted to a Malayalam setting. There is style but substance is missing in many scenes. The drama could have been elevated a bit more in the second half which was needed the most.

Marco is not a film for everyone. It caters specifically to adult audiences who enjoy action-packed dramas. The film’s style is its most captivating element. If you enjoy intense action dramas with twists and are willing to go with the flow, Marco is worth a watch. For others, it might come across as just another simple action film.

Bottom Line: More Violence, Less Emotions
