Indian student enrolments in New Zealand have surged by nearly 49% since 2021, marking a significant shift in the global education landscape. According to the report Beyond Beds & Benches – Decoding ANZ’s Education System, released in New Delhi by University Living, enrolments in New Zealand rose 48.9% between 2021 and 2024, with projections indicating a further 93.9% growth between 2025 and 2030. This increase is expected to see Indian student numbers climb from 22,225 to 43,094.

Australia, another key player in the international education sector, also witnessed a steady rise in Indian student enrolments, with a 9.2% increase between 2021 and 2024. By 2025, the number of Indian students in Australia is anticipated to surpass 101,552.

Strategic Reforms Fuel Growth

The upward trajectory of student enrolments is being driven by proactive policy reforms in both Australia and New Zealand. Saurabh Arora, Founder & CEO of University Living, noted, “Australia and New Zealand are making strategic steps to attract international students by introducing policies that simplify the study-abroad journey and enhance post-study career prospects.”

New Zealand has implemented streamlined visa processes, enhanced work-rights policies, and introduced NZ$10,000 scholarships for high-achieving Indian students. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to attracting global talent and bolstering its education sector.

Similarly, Australia’s higher education sector, which contributed AUD 47.8 billion to the economy in 2023–24, continues to reinforce its position as a global education powerhouse. Vik Singh, Trade and Investment Commissioner, South Asia, Austrade, emphasized, “Australia’s commitment to international education is evident in its world-class institutions, strong support systems, and focus on innovation. Beyond academics, Australia’s reputation as a safe, inclusive, and welcoming destination enhances the overall student experience.”

Focus on STEM, Business, and Healthcare

Both Australia and New Zealand are prioritizing key sectors such as STEM, business, and healthcare. Investments in infrastructure, student support services, and global collaborations aim to strengthen post-study employment pathways, making these countries increasingly attractive destinations for Indian students seeking long-term academic and career growth.

As competition intensifies among global education hubs, Australia and New Zealand are emerging as top choices for Indian students, offering world-class education, favorable immigration policies, and robust career opportunities.
