Indian Travellers Allege Harsh Treatment at Georgian Borde

A growing number of Indian travellers are voicing concerns about alleged mistreatment at Georgian border checkpoints, with several describing their experiences as humiliating and inhumane.

One traveller, sharing her experience on Instagram, detailed how a group of 56 Indians was detained for hours while entering Georgia via the Sadakhlo border crossing from Armenia. She claimed the group was forced to sit on the roadside in freezing temperatures for nearly five hours without access to basic facilities.

“This is how Georgia treats Indians. Shameful and unacceptable!” she wrote, alleging that Georgian officials did not even check their documents properly and simply declared their visas to be “wrong.”

Her account has resonated widely, prompting other travellers to share similar experiences. Reports include prolonged detentions, damaged documents, and what travellers describe as “criminal-like treatment” despite having valid visas.

“This is the second such incident I’ve heard of this week,” one social media user commented, adding that there appears to be a pattern of hostility toward Indian visitors. Another traveller, who had previously faced delays of up to two hours and damage to his driving license at the border, said, “Unfortunately, I experienced what many had warned us about.”

Not all accounts are negative, however. Some travellers acknowledged that while entry procedures were intimidating, the hospitality inside the country was warm. “Once I was granted entry, the rest was a dream visit,” one visitor noted.

Still, many frequent travellers caution Indians to be mentally prepared for strict and sometimes unpleasant scrutiny. One remarked, “Despite holding multiple visas for the US, Canada, Schengen, and the UK, it still didn’t matter because of my Indian passport.”

The growing number of such reports has triggered calls for Indian authorities to raise the issue diplomatically and ensure fair treatment of Indian nationals at Georgian borders.
