Internal and External security of any nation is paramount to its existence. People of any country respect their armed forces and defence personnel to the core. However in India it is completely opposite. Indians right from the poorest of the poor to the powers that be expect the armed forces to serve them under all circumstances and difficulties but will not show the due respect.
when it comes to respect, whether it is in pay commission, fighting terrorists, helping in natural calamities, handling riots, protecting politicians, people and the powers that be treat armed personnel as their slaves. True that the are slaves of the nation but without one should show due respect when armed forces are ready to make supreme sacrifices even to separatists in Kashmir.
During encounters with terrorists,Army often face accusations of false encounters and govrenment and IAS babus along with human right organisations tie their hands robbing them off their first fire option thus putting their lives in risk. Successive governments fail to take care of the families of the armed personnel who laid their lives making supreme sacrifices. Politicians boast of one rank one pension but after many decades, even in 7th pay commission they didnot get their due.
Government headed by PM Modi constituted committee headed by retired judge AK.Mathur for 7th pay commission. The panel had many members representing various sections of employees but what surprised many is none from the armed forces was included to address their problems. Many wonder how other members can understand the troubles of the army personnel who are gaurding the rough terrains.
After the recommendations of AK.Mathur was accepted by the Government, Armed forces dashed off a letter to the PM Modi and defence minister Manohar Parikkar. Even during 6th pay commission report, armed forces wrote letter to the then PM and defence minister and now the situation is similar as they faced lowering of status.
AKMathur bluntly says Armed forces are getting the best but what he failed to explain is how could IAS officer in Guwahati can get equal pay and extra allowance on par with a soldier working in Siachin, known to be the toughest terrain to guard. Unless until Government and people of the country learn to respect Armed forces, no one will come forward to serve the nation putting their lives in risk. Instead they prefer lucrative software jobs and fly to other countries.
