Instagram Unveils Key Updates: 3-Minute Reels and Rectangular Grid Layout


Instagram has introduced significant updates aimed at enhancing user experience and staying competitive in the social media landscape. The key changes include an extension of the Reels maximum length to three minutes and a shift in the profile grid layout from squares to rectangles.

The decision to extend Reels was driven by user feedback. Previously, the 90-second limit was considered restrictive, and the new three-minute cap offers more freedom for users to create longer, more detailed content. This update brings Instagram closer in line with competitors like TikTok, which has supported three-minute videos since 2021. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, explained that the change would allow users to tell richer stories and produce more creative content. This marks a notable reversal for Instagram, which had previously resisted extending the limit, citing concerns about maintaining its “core identity” centered on connecting people with friends.

In addition to the Reels change, Instagram is also updating its profile grid layout. Traditionally, the profile grid displayed posts in squares, but now it will use a rectangular format to better accommodate the increasingly vertical nature of photos and videos. Although Mosseri acknowledged that some users may prefer the classic square layout, he emphasized that the vertical format better reflects how most content is shared today. To help users manage this change, Instagram allows manual adjustments. If the automatic crop doesn’t align with a user’s preferred aesthetic, they can adjust how their posts appear in the grid. Simply tap on a post, select “Adjust Preview,” and choose between “Fit” or “Fill” options to control how the image is displayed.

These updates illustrate Instagram’s commitment to evolving with user preferences and content trends, ensuring it stays relevant and competitive in a fast-changing digital environment.
