The Israeli military confirmed on Sunday that its aerial defense systems successfully intercepted a missile launched by Houthi forces in Yemen. The interception occurred after air raid sirens were activated across Jerusalem, the Dead Sea region, and several settlements in the occupied West Bank, prompting residents to seek shelter.
No injuries or property damage were reported, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service. The projectile, reportedly a hypersonic ballistic missile, was aimed at Ben Gurion Airport, one of Israel’s primary international gateways. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the launch, stating the operation was conducted in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea announced via Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV that the missile strike targeted Ben Gurion Airport as part of a broader strategy to impose a ban on air traffic to and from the facility. He warned of further escalations unless Israel ceases its military operations in Gaza and lifts its blockade.
This latest attack underscores the growing regional dimensions of the Gaza conflict. Despite earlier declarations to suspend hostilities against U.S. targets, the Houthis have continued to target Israeli interests, including maritime traffic in the Red Sea. In response, Israel has conducted several airstrikes in Yemen, including a recent operation in the capital Sanaa, which resulted in multiple casualties and damage to the city’s main international airport.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the interception on the social media platform X, noting that the projectile was neutralized before reaching its intended target. Israeli army radio also verified the successful operation and reiterated that no casualties occurred.
Since November 2023, the Houthis—who control much of northern Yemen—have intensified their attacks on Israeli targets, aligning their military actions with broader regional support for the Palestinian cause.
