It’s Not Cricket, It’s Cinema

50 Films old, another film rolling and several other in discussion, Allari Naresh, is all set for the release of his landmark 50th film Mama Manchu Alludu Kanchu. He is as nervous as he is waiting for the release of his debut film. In a one-on-one interview, Naresh gets candid and looks back at how his career shaped up.

You scored Half Century. How’s it?

For me every film of mine is equally important. 49th film is as important as 50th and 51st is as important as 50th. For me, 50 is just a number. It’s not cricket to count number, it’s cinema.

50 Films in 13 Years!

I haven’t planned. It just happened. In fact, when I first started with Allari, I thought it’d be an achievement if I do 5 or 10 films. Time just flew. I never thought that I’d do 50 films as hero. But content is important than count. Fortunately I tried several genres. I did films like Nenu, I did films like Danger, I did films like Gamyam and a lot of hilarious films too. I’m very much lucky to act under the direction of legends like K. Viswanath garu, Bapu garu.

Any Regrets?

No regrets at all. I’m happy with all my films. Even failures have a great significance. Because of my Visakha Express, Krish cast me in Gamyam as Gaali Seenu. Had I not done Visakha, I’d not have got Gamyam. After watching my work in BendApparao, I was offered Shambo Shiva Shambo. So one doesn’t know how few films turn out and change your career. Especially in film industry, everything has got connection, link.

How Mama Manchu Alludu Kanchu happened?

I wasn’t the first choice for the role. Before me director Srinivas Reddy had considered few other actors but decided to zero in on me as I could balance Mohan Babu garu.

One day Vishnu called me and asked me to watch a Marathi film. When I watched the film, I loved it very much. I had told Vishnu that I’m interested to do the film, but told him that I’ll do another film before this. To which Vishnu and Mohan Babu garu didn’t budge and convinced me to do this. I’m happy to work with Mohan Babu garu in my 50th film. The film has very good moments.

On Mohan Babu

When the news of my film with Mohan Babu broke out, many people told me how difficult is to work with him. But all turn out to be false. He is strict, he is disciplined and at times, he might be angry. But he’s angry when there’s a strong reason. If you’re on sets on time, he won’t ask you anything. Mohan Babu garu was very friendly. When I first met him, I told him that I respect him a lot. But I had told him that I might not act well on screen, if I fear for him or has very much respect for him. Since he acted in over 500 films, he knew, he understood. And scenes involving both of us going to be hilarious.

You’re acting with Poorna for 3rd time. Anything cooking between you?

No, it wasn’t my decision. Producer Vishnu suggested to have Poorna as he liked our pair in Seema Tapakai. It’s completely professional decision.

Roles or films you’d like to do

I’d like to do ghost comedy. I’m great fan of silent movies. I’d like to do a movie like Pushpaka Vimanam (Kamal Haasan, director Singeetham Srinivas film). Also, I’d like to do emotional films like Nenu. But I don’t want to miss comedy element in all my films. I see to it that comedy would be there.

Directorial Debut?

I’m planning to direct a film soon. It will be a refined love story. I’ll not be acting in it. I’ll only direct the film. Few producers have approached me but mostly it’ll be produced on my home banner.

What’s stopping me from my directorial plans is my acting because I don’t want to lose newcomer directors who would afraid that I might finger in their direction If I had directed a film. So, it’ll take sometime.
