Jagan Proposes ‘MA-VI-GUN’ Capital Corridor as Amaravati Plan B

As the Central government moves towards declaring Amaravati as the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh through an amendment to the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, YSR Congress Party president and former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has sparked a fresh debate with an alternative proposal he described as a “Plan B” for the capital region.

Speaking at a media briefing, Jagan suggested that instead of confining the capital to Amaravati alone, the government should consider developing a larger urban corridor stretching from Machilipatnam to Vijayawada and Guntur as a unified capital zone.

He proposed transforming this stretch into an integrated capital region, arguing that it would enable long-term, balanced economic growth and stronger infrastructure development across the area.

According to his proposal, the envisioned capital belt would span nearly 110 kilometres, connecting Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur. He said this region holds strong potential to emerge as Andhra Pradesh’s key “growth engine” with planned investments in connectivity, urban services, and administration.

Jagan also suggested the name “MA-VI-GUN,” derived from the three cities, while adding that if the name is perceived as politically sensitive, the government is free to choose an alternative.

He emphasized that development should not be concentrated in a single location, but distributed across a broader corridor to ensure inclusive urban growth. He noted that the combined population of the three regions is around 40 lakh, and with focused planning, the area could develop into a major administrative and economic hub.

Clarifying his position, Jagan said the YSR Congress Party is not opposed to Amaravati or any specific region, and reiterated that the party has never taken an anti-regional stand on the capital issue.

He concluded that the proposal is intended purely as a development-oriented vision rather than a political statement.
