India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in the Netherlands on Monday as part of a six-day official visit to three key European nations— the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany— aimed at deepening strategic and economic engagement with the region.
Dr. Jaishankar was warmly received by Indian Ambassador to the Netherlands Kumar Tuhin and Ms. Gabriella Sancisi, Director of Protocol and Host Country Affairs at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The visit, scheduled from May 19 to 24, underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its partnerships with European countries across a broad spectrum of sectors, including trade, investment, digital cooperation, climate action, and shared security interests.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the EAM will engage in high-level meetings with the leadership of the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany. Discussions will encompass the full range of bilateral relations and pressing regional and global issues of mutual interest, with a particular focus on strategic collaboration and multilateral coordination.
The visit follows a series of high-level engagements between India and the Netherlands. In April, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal led a delegation to the Netherlands, reaffirming India’s interest in expanding trade and economic cooperation. The visit further highlighted the Netherlands’ status as a key economic and innovation partner for India within the European Union.
The diplomatic outreach comes at a crucial juncture as India intensifies its global engagements and strengthens its European ties amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and economic challenges.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi canceled his planned trip to Croatia, Norway, and the Netherlands due to escalating tensions with Pakistan. In a show of solidarity, Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, reiterating the Netherlands’ firm stance against terrorism.
“I just spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the horrific terrorist attack that occurred earlier this week in Pahalgam and extended my sympathy to the victims, their loved ones and the people of India. The Netherlands stands shoulder to shoulder with India in the fight against terrorism, now and in the future,” PM Schoof posted on X.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation for the support and emphasized India’s resolve to work closely with the Netherlands in combating terrorism globally.
Dr. Jaishankar’s visit is expected to further consolidate India’s multifaceted partnerships with its European counterparts and bolster cooperation in addressing shared global challenges.
