Janhvi Kapoor–Pavithra Menon Row: Singer Clears the Air

Bollywood beauty Janhvi Kapoor is not just busy with projects in Hindi cinema but is also making her mark in the South with back-to-back opportunities. In Telugu, she is currently working on Peddi, alongside Ram Charan under the direction of Buchi Babu Sana. At the same time, she recently appeared in Bollywood with Param Sundari, produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock Films banner and directed by Tushar Jalota. Released on August 29, the film has been running successfully.

However, when the trailer of Param Sundari was released, some criticism arose about Janhvi Kapoor being portrayed as a Malayali girl in the Kerala-based story. Many questioned why a local Malayali actress wasn’t cast. Notably, singer Pavithra Menon also released a video voicing disappointment, which sparked a controversy at the time. With criticism growing, Pavithra Menon has now clarified her stand.

Speaking on the matter, Pavithra Menon said:
“I am a singer, not an actress. Reports claiming that I criticized Janhvi Kapoor as a Malayali actress are completely false. What I said was taken out of context. I have no anger or personal grudge against her. I only raised a point about language representation. I personally met Janhvi twice, and she’s a wonderful person. Filmmakers can cast actors from anywhere, but when they bring in outsiders, they should also hire language trainers. It only adds authenticity and never harms the film. I have no differences with Janhvi at all.”

Earlier, Janhvi Kapoor herself responded to the controversy, saying:
“I am not a Malayali girl, and even my mother Sridevi was not a Malayali. But I have always been fascinated by Kerala’s culture. In Param Sundari, I don’t just play a Malayali girl, but also a Tamil character.”

The controversy originally started when Pavithra Menon questioned in a video: “For a Kerala backdrop film, were there no Malayali actresses available? Why cast a Hindi actress in such a role?” That video went viral, sparking heated debates, and was later deleted from Instagram. While the issue snowballed over the weeks, Pavithra Menon’s recent clarification has finally given clarity on the matter.
