Nearly nine films were released in the first month of the New Year and only one out them has been successful.
January started on a disastrous note for Telugu cinema with the first part of much anticipated NTR biopic ending up as dead rubber at the box office.
The film was expected to set the cash registers ringing but instead it turned out to be one of the biggest disasters ever in Telugu cinema history.
Vinaya Vidheya Rama was considered as the winning horse among Sankranthi releases that even Dil Raju had bet on it big time. But it turned out to be a forgettable dud for both the director Boyapati Srinu and actor Ram Charan.
Thanks to Sankranthi festival, the film was able to recover more than Rs. 60 crore but it was not enough as the buyers lost nearly Rs. 25 crore on it.
F2 turned out to be the surprise blockbuster as it went from strength to strength with each passing day. It is still minting money in its fourth week and is likely to reach Rs. 75 crore mark very soon.
Besides F2, none worked at the box office in January. Petta ended up as another flop for Rajinikanth and Mr. Majnu has left Akhil’s career in a mess. Despite its decent content Mr. Majnu failed to click with the target audience.
On a whole, Tollywood had little fun and more frustration in the first month of 2019.
