Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar has openly criticized the makers of Border 2 for reusing songs from the 1997 classic, describing the move as a sign of “creative and intellectual bankruptcy.”
As part of the film’s promotional campaign, the iconic song “Sandese Aate Hai” was released, evoking nostalgia but also drawing criticism, as many noted that the new version sounded like a modified rendition of the original track penned by Akhtar nearly three decades ago.
In a recent interview, Akhtar revealed that he had been approached to work on the sequel but chose to decline, expressing his disagreement with revisiting old material. He questioned the need to remix songs that have already attained iconic status and urged filmmakers to either create fresh content or acknowledge that recreating past magic is not always possible. According to him, relying on past hits reflects a lack of confidence in contemporary creativity.
Directed by Anurag Singh and starring Sunny Deol, Border 2 revisits the 1971 India–Pakistan war, featuring Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, and Diljit Dosanjh among others.
Despite being one of the most anticipated releases of the season, Akhtar’s remarks have sparked a larger debate on originality and creativity in Hindi cinema today. The film is scheduled to release on 23rd January.
