Kajol’s Behind-the-Scenes Struggles During DDLJ Shoot

Today’s generation of film stars enjoy every possible luxury on set. From the moment they leave home, producers arrange expensive cars to pick them up, and upon reaching the shooting location, air-conditioned vanity vans are waiting. Stars can rest comfortably, get ready, and step out only when it’s time to face the camera. After a shot, they return to their caravan, where breakfast, lunch, and evening snacks are all taken care of.

For actresses, even personal staff are accommodated by the production team. But this was not the case in earlier times. Back in the 80s and 90s, film sets did not have these facilities. Actresses had to make do with what was available — sometimes even changing costumes behind trees due to lack of privacy. Many of today’s senior actresses have experienced those struggles.

Recently, it came to light that even Kajol went through the same experience during the shooting of the cult classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Karan Johar, who worked as an assistant director on the film, shared this anecdote.

He revealed that during the Switzerland schedule of DDLJ, Kajol often had to change her costumes behind trees. “Although a vanity van was available, it was usually crowded, and asking for privacy wasn’t always possible. Kajol’s mother was always by her side during the shoot. Sometimes, when a makeup artist wasn’t around, I would fix her hair myself and even help with her makeup. Those moments are some of my fondest memories. Looking back now, when everything is so easy, those days feel very special,” said Karan Johar.

The story highlights how much the industry has changed over the years, from simple, challenging conditions on sets to the luxurious facilities available to stars today.
