Kalvakuntla Kavitha’s Ordeal in Tihar: A Story of Resilience

2024 proved to be an exceptionally challenging year for Kalvakuntla Kavitha, a prominent leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR). Kavitha faced a significant personal and political setback following her arrest in the Delhi liquor scam case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 15, 2024. She endured over 150 days in Tihar Jail before being released on August 27, 2024.

In a recent interview with a Telangana-based media outlet, Kavitha provided an emotional account of her time in incarceration, shedding light on the hardships she faced in one of India’s most infamous prisons.

When questioned about why her father, KCR, did not visit her in jail, Kavitha offered a candid response. “Don’t place the blame on my father. I specifically asked my father, my mother, my father-in-law, my mother-in-law, and my sister-in-law not to come to Tihar Jail. I did not want them anywhere near the premises,” she stated firmly.

Kavitha elaborated on the severe conditions within the jail, describing extreme heat and inhospitable living conditions. She highlighted the constant illumination inside the facility, making it difficult for inmates to rest. “The lights were on 24/7, which made it extremely hard to sleep. The weather was unbearable, and the conditions were very challenging. I sincerely hope that even my staunchest opponents never have to suffer what I endured in jail,” she added.

Her ordeal in Tihar Jail, coupled with the political and legal battles surrounding the case, has undoubtedly left a profound impact on her. As she resumes her public life, it remains to be seen how this experience shapes her political journey in the years ahead.
