Kalyani Priyadarshan, daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan, has steadily carved a niche for herself in Indian cinema since her 2017 Telugu debut with Hello! and a string of successful Malayalam films. With her latest venture, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, where she plays Indian cinema’s first Superwoman, Kalyani is taking a bold leap forward. In an exclusive conversation, she shares insights into the film, her career journey, and her vision for the future.

“The industry has long been male-dominated, but I think we’re at a turning point,” says Kalyani. “Audiences are ready for strong, women-led stories. With the support of people like Dulquer Salmaan, who believe in these narratives, doors are opening. It’s inspiring to see both men and women celebrate these films and acknowledge the talent women bring to the screen.”

Kalyani’s career has been marked by steady growth and carefully chosen roles. “Growing up, my father emphasized the importance of craft over fame. I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities that allowed me to wait for stories that truly resonate. It’s a combination of hard work, patience, and a bit of divine grace, and I’m deeply grateful for every step of the journey.”

She explains how Lokah came to life: “Screenwriter Dominic Arun and cinematographer Nimish Ravi had been developing the story for years. Initially, it was meant to be a small standalone project, but Dulquer saw a much larger universe in it and encouraged them to expand the scope. Thanks to their vision, my character Chandra’s journey became far bigger than initially imagined.”

The shooting process was intense but exhilarating. “Most of the filming happened at night for months. With stunts and action sequences happening non-stop for three weeks straight, it pushed me beyond my limits. Training for the role completely transformed me—both physically and mentally—and I discovered a strength I never knew I had. Those weeks, though tough, are among my fondest memories.”

Reflecting on her career so far, Kalyani says, “Every film has been a stepping stone—some moved me forward, others made me pause and reflect. I’m excited for what’s next: Genie with Ravi Mohan and Marshall, a rural gangster drama with Karthi. Both projects are unique and very different from anything I’ve done before.”

With Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, Kalyani Priyadarshan isn’t just embracing a challenging role—she’s reshaping what it means to be a woman hero in Indian cinema.
