Before the release of Thug Life, Kamal Haasan’s bold and exaggerated promotional statements raised eyebrows—even among his loyal fans. Now, post-release, many believe those statements did more harm than good, creating inflated expectations that ultimately led to massive disappointment. What’s worse, these promotional tactics have made fans skeptical about Indian 3 as well.
Looking back, during the promotions of Indian 2, Kamal chose to shift the focus entirely to Indian 3, hyping it up as the real game-changer in the franchise. While Indian 2 was yet to hit theatres, Kamal was already discussing the third part at length in every interview. After the film’s underwhelming performance, many speculated that Kamal intentionally deflected attention from Indian 2, knowing it wouldn’t live up to audience expectations. His words didn’t align with the film’s content, leaving fans feeling misled.
The trend repeated with Thug Life. Kamal went on record saying it would surpass Nayakan, a cult classic from 38 years ago made in collaboration with Mani Ratnam. He claimed Thug Life would reveal a new side of Mani Ratnam, who he said had reinvented his style. However, after the release, it became painfully clear that the film didn’t come close to matching Nayakan in any aspect—be it story, execution, or impact. Fans were left puzzled over Kamal’s grand claims.
Now, all eyes are on Indian 3, directed by Shankar. The film is reportedly completed, but there is speculation that it may skip theatres and opt for a direct digital release. Had Thug Life been a box office success, it might have helped Indian 3 secure a theatrical window. But with the recent backlash, fans are concerned about Kamal facing yet another round of humiliation. Many now believe that Indian 3 might also be a victim of overhype, following the same path as its predecessor and Thug Life.
At this point, fans feel Kamal Haasan’s lofty promotional talk is becoming more of a gimmick than a genuine reflection of a film’s quality. Whether Indian 3 can break this pattern or fall into the same trap remains to be seen. Only time will tell.
