Journalist Nishant of M9 News recently sat down with legendary actor Kamal Hassan and popular star Simbu in Chennai ahead of the highly anticipated release of their film Thug Life on June 5th. The candid conversation delved into their collaboration, creative processes, and insights into the film industry.
Reflecting on his reunion with acclaimed director Mani Ratnam after three decades since Nayakan, Kamal Hassan revealed the genesis of Thug Life’s script and their joint creative efforts. “We explored many stories that didn’t materialize. I shared a script idea with Mani and told him either he or I should take it forward. He liked it. So it’s neither solely my story nor entirely his — it’s a true collaboration,” Kamal explained.
Simbu, a devoted fan and accomplished actor, shared his excitement about working with Kamal and Mani Ratnam, especially after witnessing the legendary Nayakan multiple times. “As a fan, it’s thrilling to see legends come together again. As an actor, it also shaped how I approached my role,” he noted.
When asked about the hallmark of great cinema, Kamal Hassan emphasized actors’ intrinsic ability to recognize quality projects. “Actors may not always predict commercial success, but they inherently know when they’re part of a good film,” he said.
The discussion also touched upon working with visionary directors like Shankar and Mani Ratnam consecutively. Kamal Hassan opined on the importance of evolution in filmmaking, “Form is not the challenge; updating oneself to contemporary times is key. A good director remains a good director. Mani Ratnam is a legend who continues to inspire, and we shouldn’t let him rest just yet.”
Addressing audience curiosity about Thug Life, Kamal hinted at unique elements such as the symbolism behind the film’s logo featuring a Crescent and Dove — representing peace and Islam respectively. He also responded to questions about the status of his numerous scripts reportedly stored on his iPad and shared insights on his recent visit to the US to explore advancements in AI technology — a learning that could propel his dream project Marudhanayagam.
