Kamal Hassan’s Emotional Bond with Visakhapatnam

Ulaganayagan Kamal Hassan recently shared an emotional recollection of his deep connection with Visakhapatnam, dating back to the 1970s when he filmed the iconic Telugu movie ‘Maro Charitra’ along the city’s picturesque shores. Directed by K. Balachander, the film not only earned Kamal Hassan a legendary status among Telugu audiences but also led many to believe he was a native of Vizag.

Speaking at the pre-release event of his upcoming action drama ‘Thug Life’ in Vizag, Kamal reflected on how Telugu fans often mistook him for a local. “In Madras and Bombay, Telugu people would often ask if I frequently visited my hometown Vizag. I had to tell them the truth that I wasn’t actually from there,” he said. “But the fact that they embraced me so warmly showed how much I was loved by the Telugu audience. I was just 21 back then, a fresh face, and ‘Maro Charitra’ released in 1978, winning hearts across Andhra Pradesh.”

Kamal Hassan also fondly remembered how Telugu audiences celebrated his Bollywood film ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye,’ which was also shot in Vizag. He recounted his visits to the region for other projects like ‘Sagara Sangamam’ and ‘Subha Sankalpam,’ filmed in the nearby village of Jonnavalasa in Vizianagaram. “I truly feel at home here. As an artist, wherever you humble yourself to connect with people, you find a home. That’s why I believe I have found my true ‘kshetra’ — my ‘Kala Kshetra,’” he expressed warmly.
