Manchu Vishnu’s ambitious mythological drama Kannappa has concluded its opening weekend with a respectable performance at the box office. While it didn’t shatter records, the film witnessed impressive occupancy across key urban centres, particularly during afternoon and evening shows, which saw near-full attendance in several locations.
Driven by its devotional theme and the much-hyped cameo by Prabhas, Kannappa is now on course to potentially become the highest-grossing film of Vishnu’s career. Trade analysts estimate the film’s three-day gross to be in the range of ₹50 to ₹60 crore, though official numbers are still awaited.
However, the real test begins now — the weekdays. Typically, theatre footfalls drop significantly after the weekend, and only strong content manages to retain over 50% of its initial momentum. The big question: can Kannappa sustain its traction?
While Prabhas’ cameo helped draw crowds over the weekend, such appearances are often limited in their ability to drive repeat viewership. For Kannappa to enjoy a longer theatrical run, it needs to resonate with mass and family audiences beyond the initial fan frenzy. The devotional genre, while appealing to a niche segment, may not attract all sections of the audience.
Adding to the concerns, Vishnu Manchu has publicly acknowledged that piracy has already begun affecting the film, which could further dampen its box office prospects.
On ticketing platforms like BookMyShow, Kannappa ranked fourth in sales yesterday, behind Sitare Zameen Par, F1, and Maa. Kannappa sold approximately 92,000 tickets, while Maa and F1 registered 96,000 and 99,000 respectively. Sitare Zameen Par led the charts with over 2 lakh ticket sales.
As Kannappa steps into its crucial weekday phase, all eyes are on whether it can defy the odds and maintain steady collections—or fizzle out after a star-powered start.
