South star Suriya enjoys a massive fanbase across all southern states. From Tamil Nadu to Telugu-speaking audiences and other South Indian states, his following is immense. Among the current crop of senior heroes, Suriya stands out for his unmatched acting prowess, incredible hard work, and dedication. However, the last few years haven’t been kind to him at the box office.
His highly-anticipated pan-Indian film Kanguva, directed by Siva, ended up as a box office disaster, which left Suriya extremely disappointed. Adding salt to the wound was the failure of Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. What’s more worrying is the constant wave of negativity surrounding his films on social media. Even Jyothika once pointed out that there was a deliberate smear campaign against Suriya’s Kanguva, suggesting that vested interests and social media groups were conspiring to damage his image.
Now, Karthik Subbaraj too claims that the primary reason for Retro’s failure was the toxic online negativity. In a recent interview with Galatta, he stated that paid promotions were actively pushing a false narrative against the film and its hero. According to him, there’s an organized system at play on social media, targeting certain actors and their movies with paid campaigns to degrade them.
Interestingly, despite the negativity, Retro is receiving high praise on OTT platforms, especially for its action episodes and first-half storytelling. But at the box office, the movie struggled to cross the ₹50 crore mark due to this orchestrated smear campaign.
Karthik Subbaraj was visibly emotional as he spoke about how the film’s momentum was damaged by fake reviews and viral negativity. “Every actor has an enemy camp on Twitter,” he said. “There are offices dedicated to such propaganda.” Expressing his distress, Karthik added that the paid smear campaign had seriously hurt the film’s performance, even though audiences who actually watched it loved the movie.
He concluded by calling the practice extremely dangerous, revealing that the entire team was left shocked and bewildered by the negativity surrounding their honest work.
