Karthik Subbaraj’s Telugu Test with Retro

Share

Karthik Subbaraj is widely regarded as one of the most innovative filmmakers in Tamil cinema. His signature style—rooted in western influences, stylized filmmaking, and layered storytelling—has earned him critical acclaim. However, when it comes to the Telugu film market, his track record tells a different story.

Except for Pizza, which managed to find an audience, most of Subbaraj’s films, like Petta and Jigarthanda Double X, failed to strike a chord with Telugu viewers. Even though Mahaan resonated with youth and mass audiences to some extent, the filmmaker still hasn’t had a consistent breakthrough in the Telugu market.

Now, all eyes are on his upcoming film Retro, starring Suriya in the lead role. While Suriya’s presence adds star value and has the potential to draw initial crowds, the concern in Telugu trade circles revolves more around Karthik Subbaraj’s inconsistent form than Suriya’s box office appeal.

The recently released trailer for Retro was well-received in Tamil Nadu, but the Telugu audience didn’t seem equally impressed. The filmmaking style, dialogues, and overall vibe of the trailer didn’t resonate the way one would hope. As a result, the film is now heavily reliant on Suriya’s stardom and strong word-of-mouth to perform well in Telugu states.

The challenge is even greater with Retro clashing with Nani’s much-anticipated HIT 3, which already has solid buzz and a loyal fanbase. For Retro to succeed, it must overcome the stylistic disconnect and deliver a story that emotionally engages Telugu audiences.
