On February 7, 2025, a consortium of United Nations agencies announced the shortlisting of 15 innovation hubs as part of the Digital Platforms Kenya initiative. This three-year UN-backed project aims to catalyze the growth of Kenya’s digital economy while promoting equity and inclusivity. The initiative is set to position the country as a leading knowledge economy hub in Africa.
The shortlisted hubs, selected following a call for applications in December 2024 that attracted over 50 submissions, will play a pivotal role in empowering Kenya’s youth and women through digital skills training, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable development. The evaluation criteria for these hubs focused on their potential to facilitate digital innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusivity, particularly for marginalized communities.
John Tanui, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Digital Economy, emphasized that these hubs would provide critical platforms to nurture innovation and enterprise. He stated, “Kenya’s digital innovation hubs are crucial for its economic future. Investing in them empowers youth and women with digital skills, fueling innovation and inclusive growth.”
The hubs are strategically located across Kenya’s counties, ensuring wide accessibility. They will provide tailored mentorship and training on essential digital skills, critical thinking, and the ethical application of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative aims to bridge Kenya’s digital divide, equipping citizens and government officials with the tools needed to fully participate in the country’s digital transformation.
Beyond skills development, these hubs are expected to support emerging entrepreneurs in scaling their digital businesses, ultimately driving economic growth, creating jobs, and fostering social cohesion. The initiative is anticipated to generate 4,500 direct jobs and an additional 20,000 indirect jobs by 2027. Furthermore, it will empower over 20,000 government officials and citizens with the skills needed to navigate and thrive in Kenya’s evolving digital landscape.
Stephen Jackson, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, emphasized the importance of the hubs in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kenya. He highlighted the hubs’ potential to benefit historically marginalized groups, including women, youth, and nomadic communities.
The Digital Platforms Kenya initiative represents a significant step towards a more inclusive, equitable, and digitally empowered Kenya, fostering economic opportunities for all citizens while ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital transformation process.
