Kerala HC Orders Grave Excavation in Mysterious Burial Case

The Kerala High Court has ordered the excavation of a grave in Thiruvananthapuram, following a mysterious case that has captivated the local community. The incident involves the alleged living burial of Gopan Swami, also known as Manyan, near a temple in Neyyatinkara. The burial, carried out in secrecy without the knowledge of his extended family or the community, has raised serious concerns about potential foul play.

Adding to the intrigue, the family had reportedly distributed posters claiming that Gopan Swami was buried alive, sparking widespread alarm. Locals and relatives questioned the possibility of a visually impaired man, who had not left his home in years, managing to orchestrate such a burial himself. The secrecy surrounding the event and the family’s insistence on privacy further fueled suspicions.

The police, alerted by concerned residents, submitted a report to the District Collector. While Sub-Collector Alfred O.V. initially directed the grave to be unearthed, Gopan Swami’s immediate family, particularly his wife and sons, opposed the move, leading to a legal battle. The case eventually reached the Kerala High Court, which ruled in favor of the grave’s excavation to uncover the truth.

Tensions in the community have intensified as the court’s directive is set to be implemented. Gopan’s sons, Sanandan and Rajesan, along with other family members, have maintained their opposition to the exhumation, citing religious beliefs and personal rights. Sanandan even appealed to Hindu organizations for support, emphasizing the need to protect their faith and family autonomy.

The upcoming excavation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Gopan Swami’s death and burial. As suspicions of foul play clash with the family’s defense, the case has become a focal point of public and legal attention. The revelations from the grave are anticipated to bring clarity to this unusual and unsettling situation.
