North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held talks with Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of Russia’s State Duma, in Pyongyang on Thursday, where Volodin conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Russian media reports.

The meeting took place during Volodin’s visit to mark the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. At a commemorative event, Volodin extended Putin’s congratulations to the North Korean leadership and people, while also expressing gratitude for Pyongyang’s support for Russian forces in the Kursk frontline amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, TASS reported.

Volodin, leading a Russian parliamentary delegation, also met Choe Ryong-hae, Chairman of North Korea’s parliamentary standing committee, to discuss enhancing interparliamentary cooperation.

Earlier this week, Kim held phone talks with Putin, expressing “full support” for Russia and reaffirming commitment to the DPRK-Russia mutual defense treaty signed last year. Putin reportedly appreciated the “bravery and heroism” of North Korean troops aiding Russian forces. The conversation came ahead of Putin’s scheduled summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

Both leaders pledged to deepen bilateral ties and maintain closer communication in the future, according to state media.
