Kollywood 1000 crore club and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life

The coveted 1000 crore club is a dream come true for many in the Indian film industry. Tollywood, Bollywood, and Sandalwood have all proudly joined this elite league, but Kollywood and Mollywood have yet to taste this success despite their persistent efforts. The sweet fruit of the 1000 crore mark continues to evade these two industries.

Recently, the legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam faced questions about this very issue. Currently promoting his upcoming film Thug Life, Mani Ratnam was asked by journalists if Kollywood can ever achieve this milestone. In response, the maestro expressed his concerns that the pressure to chase massive box office numbers can sometimes hinder the creation of quality, meaningful cinema.

Mani Ratnam questioned, “Are we making films just to earn huge amounts of money?” He emphasized the importance of creating authentic and high-standard films rather than merely focusing on commercial success. He also voiced his worry that business pressures might suppress creativity within the industry. From his remarks, it’s clear that Thug Life is not specifically aimed at joining the 1000 crore club.

Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, is set to release on June 5, 2025. The gangster action drama stars Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan as father and adopted son, respectively. The film delves into power politics, betrayal, and revenge, portraying the brutal political rivalry between father and son. Kamal Haasan plays Rangaraya Shaktivel Nayakar, an old gangster, while Silambarasan’s character Amaran rises to become a mafia don. Mani Ratnam explores the intense power struggles and the game of legacy politics in this gripping narrative. The film will be released simultaneously across all South Indian languages as well as in Hindi, aiming for a wide-reaching impact.
