Sekhar Kammula’s much-anticipated multi-starrer Kuberaa, featuring Dhanush and Nagarjuna, has turned out to be a commercial success in the Telugu states, crossing the ₹100 crore gross mark within just ten days of its release. Despite stiff competition from the recently released Kannappa, the film has continued to draw strong footfalls in theatres across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, firmly establishing itself as a clean box office hit.
The Telugu version’s strong momentum has been attributed to positive word-of-mouth, star power, and the advantage of increased ticket prices during the opening week. The success has brought considerable cheer to the team, including lead actors Dhanush and Nagarjuna, as well as the producers at Asian Cinemas.
However, Kuberaa has not seen the same level of enthusiasm in Tamil Nadu. Trade reports from Kollywood suggest that the film has garnered less than ₹20 crore in Tamil Nadu so far, which is underwhelming for a star of Dhanush’s stature. This muted response has raised eyebrows, especially given the actor’s previous successes in intense, performance-driven roles in films like Asuran, Karnan, and Vada Chennai.
Analysts cite a few possible reasons for the underperformance in the Tamil market: the narrative’s balanced focus on both Dhanush and Nagarjuna, a lack of conventional heroism in Dhanush’s character, and Sekhar Kammula’s distinctive storytelling style—which, while appreciated in Telugu cinema, may feel unfamiliar to a Tamil audience.
Initial expectations that the film might gain momentum in Tamil Nadu over time are now fading. Still, industry observers note that Kuberaa may find a warmer reception with Tamil viewers once it reaches streaming platforms.
For now, while Kuberaa’s performance remains regionally polarized, its Telugu box office triumph is undeniable—and continues to solidify Dhanush’s growing presence in the Telugu film industry.
