Veteran playback singer Kumar Sanu has approached the Bombay High Court by filing a defamation case against his former wife, Rita Bhattacharya. In his petition, Sanu has sought ₹30 lakh as compensation, alleging that certain interviews given by Rita have caused serious damage to his personal and professional reputation.

The matter was heard by the court on December 17. Representing the singer, senior advocate Sana Raees Khan informed the court that the statements made by Rita in various media interactions are not only false and defamatory but also in clear violation of the divorce settlement agreed upon by both parties. Sanu has further requested the court to direct the removal of these interviews from all platforms.

According to the petition, the divorce settlement was formally recorded at the Bandra Family Court on February 9, 2001. One of the key conditions in the agreement explicitly stated that neither Kumar Sanu nor Rita Bhattacharya would make allegations or defamatory remarks against each other following their separation. Sanu’s legal team argued that this clause has been breached through the recent interviews.

Kumar Sanu married Rita Bhattacharya in the late 1980s, and the couple has three children—Jiko, Jassi, and Jaan. After their separation, their son Jaan Sanu gained significant popularity through his participation in the reality show Bigg Boss 14. In the past, Kumar Sanu was also linked to actress Kunickaa Sadanand, though the two never tied the knot.

The case has once again brought Sanu’s personal life into the spotlight, with the court set to examine whether the alleged remarks indeed amount to defamation and violation of the divorce agreement.
