L2: Empuraan Faces Controversy Amid Strong Box Office Run

The anticipation surrounding L2: Empuraan, the sequel to Lucifer, was immense, given the blockbuster success of its predecessor. However, despite the initial buzz, the film’s promotional content failed to generate the expected hype, and its reception has been mixed. Many viewers expressed disappointment, stating that the film did not meet their expectations.

Beyond its box office performance, Empuraan has found itself at the center of a heated political and religious controversy. A particular scene depicting a Hindu extremist attack on a Muslim family—allegedly inspired by the 2002 Godhra riots—has triggered severe backlash. The depiction of a Hindu extremist assaulting a pregnant Muslim woman has drawn intense criticism from BJP supporters, who argue that the film carries anti-Hindu undertones and unfairly targets the Modi government.

In response, left-leaning political parties in Kerala and Congress supporters have defended the film, stating that the same critics who championed movies like The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story—which faced allegations of propaganda—are now opposing Empuraan. They also highlighted other films like Chhaava, questioning whether selective outrage is at play.

Amid the growing controversy, producer Gokulam Gopalan has responded, stating that director Prithviraj Sukumaran has been advised to make necessary alterations to address concerns. While he acknowledged that some scenes may have unintentionally hurt sentiments, he noted that modifying them would be a complex and costly process, with an estimated expenditure of ₹40 lakh across 4,000 cinemas.

Despite the ongoing debates, Empuraan continues to perform well at the Kerala box office, proving that the controversy has not deterred its core audience.
