Not long ago, Lokesh Kanagaraj was hailed as one of the finest filmmakers in South Indian cinema. However, his recent films suggest a downward trend, with the director seemingly unable to meet the towering expectations built around his name.
His latest outing, Coolie with Superstar Rajinikanth, has left audiences underwhelmed. The film, criticized for its weak writing and lack of signature Lokesh flair, failed to live up to the hype. Despite his strong reputation, Lokesh has been unable to stamp his authority with the kind of gripping storytelling fans associate with him.
When questioned about the disappointing response to Coolie, Lokesh pointed to the burden of expectations. He argued that audiences assumed the film would be part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) or even a time-travel saga. “People expect a lot from Rajni sir and me. But if my writing doesn’t meet those expectations, it can’t entirely be my fault. All I can do is try again,” he explained.
This isn’t the first time Lokesh has defended his work through post-release explanations. Following Leo, he suggested that the film’s flashback sequence might have been entirely fictional, hinting that he had other interpretations in mind. While such theories may intrigue a section of fans, they also raise questions about clarity in his storytelling.
Audiences naturally look to a young and passionate filmmaker like Lokesh for a powerful theatrical experience. However, instead of letting his films speak for themselves, his tendency to justify or reinterpret them after release has drawn criticism. With expectations still sky-high, Lokesh will need to rely on stronger narratives and compelling execution rather than retrospective clarifications to reclaim his stature.
