At a time when legendary filmmakers like Shankar and Mani Ratnam are struggling to recreate their past box office magic, Lokesh Kanagaraj has emerged as the new-age crowd-puller in Kollywood.
Known for his gripping action storytelling, Lokesh has carved a niche for himself with films like Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo. His ability to create strong character arcs and build an interlinked cinematic universe has struck a chord with the masses. Realistic action sequences, compelling narratives, and consistent box office success have positioned him as one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable directors. Notably, he has delivered no flops so far.
In contrast, Shankar, once hailed for his visual grandeur and message-driven narratives, has seen a dip in success. Despite delivering some of the most expensive and technically grand films in Indian cinema during the 2000s, his recent ventures like Indian 2 and Game Changer have not met expectations.
Similarly, Mani Ratnam, whose filmmaking redefined Tamil cinema in the ’80s and ’90s, seems to have lost the pulse of the current audience. His latest film Thug Life, released this Friday, received a mixed response. While his legacy remains unquestioned, his recent themes haven’t resonated well with younger viewers.
In this transitional phase of Kollywood, many fans and critics believe Lokesh Kanagaraj is filling the creative vacuum. His upcoming film Coolie, featuring Superstar Rajinikanth, is already generating buzz, especially with Nelson also working on Jailer 2.
With Kollywood currently in a dry spell, all eyes are on Lokesh to deliver another blockbuster and further cement his place as the future of Tamil cinema.
