Lokesh Kanagaraj to Reunite Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan?

Despite having just six films under his belt, director Lokesh Kanagaraj has made a mark in Tamil cinema with hits like Kaithi, Master, Vikram, and Leo, earning him widespread acclaim. Following the success of Coolie, reports from Kollywood suggest that his next project could be his most ambitious yet — potentially reuniting superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan on screen for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Coolie, despite receiving mixed reviews, reportedly earned over Rs 400 crore in just five days, giving Lokesh the distinction of directing Tamil cinema’s two highest opening day grossers: Leo and Coolie.

According to insiders, Lokesh’s upcoming script revolves around two aging gangsters and is expected to be jointly produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International and Sun Pictures. A recent meeting reportedly took place to discuss the project. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, who previously acted together in several films, had mutually decided to pursue solo projects after their last collaboration in the 1985 Hindi film Geraftaar, where Rajini made a cameo appearance.

Speculation about their reunion gained momentum when Rajinikanth hinted at the possibility during the Coolie audio launch. He remarked, “When Lokesh told me another big star was doing a cameo, I immediately thought it was Kamal Haasan, and I was on Cloud Nine.” While fans are eager, an official announcement is still awaited.

If this project comes to fruition, it could delay Lokesh’s planned Kaithi 2 with Karthi. In addition, he is set to make his acting debut in an Arun Matheswaran film and is also co-writing and producing the LCU film Benz.
