The much-anticipated sequel, Mad Square, has finally hit the silver screens, drawing enthusiastic crowds despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Following in the footsteps of its 2023 predecessor Mad, which was a roaring success, this sequel carries forward the madcap humor and energetic performances that made the original a blockbuster.
Helmed by director Kalyan Shankar and produced by Naga Vamsi, Mad Square boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Sangeeth Shobhan, Narne Nithin, Ram Nitin, and Priyanka Jawalkar. Their performances, coupled with the film’s comic timing, have been the primary drivers behind its strong box office numbers, especially benefiting from the festive season surge.
However, what has taken many by surprise is the film’s underwhelming soundtrack. Unlike Mad, where music played a crucial role in capturing the youthful essence of the film, Mad Square fails to recreate the same magic. The soundtrack, composed by Bheems Ceciroleo, has been met with disappointment, barring the chart-topping track Swathi Reddy, which has managed to garner some traction among the youth. The remaining songs, unfortunately, have failed to strike a chord.
Adding to the musical woes, the background score by Thaman, which was expected to elevate key moments in the film, has also been met with lukewarm reception. This has been a rare instance in Tollywood where a sequel’s music has fallen short of the expectations set by its predecessor.
Despite its musical shortcomings, Mad Square has been raking in impressive numbers at the box office, leveraging the holiday season to its advantage. However, its true test lies in how it sustains during the weekdays, which will ultimately determine its overall commercial success.
For now, Mad Square continues to entertain audiences with its humor and engaging performances, proving that strong content can sometimes overcome the absence of an exceptional soundtrack. Whether it will enjoy a long theatrical run remains to be seen, but its initial success is a testament to the strength of its brand and fan following.
