Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: A Spiritual and Economic Powerhouse for Uttar Pradesh

The Maha Kumbh Mela is currently being held in Uttar Pradesh, drawing millions of devotees to the sacred city of Prayagraj. This morning, lakhs of pilgrims participated in the first holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, marking the beginning of the grand religious event. With an investment of ₹7,000 crore, the Uttar Pradesh government has ensured meticulous planning and infrastructure to accommodate the vast number of attendees.

Over the next 45 days, from now until February 26th, more than 40 crore people are expected to visit the Kumbh Mela, which is taking place after a 12-year gap. On the first day itself, over 50 lakh people took their holy dip at Sangam. The event is spread across an area of 4,000 hectares, with arrangements to handle the large crowd and ensure a smooth and safe experience.

The state government estimates the event will generate an economic boost of up to ₹2 lakh crore, contributing significantly to Uttar Pradesh’s growth. Each visitor is expected to spend an average of ₹5,000, leading to a surge in demand across various sectors. It’s projected that the combined effect on both nominal and real GDP will be an increase of over 1 percent.

The 2019 Ardh Kumbh Mela had already brought in a revenue of ₹1.2 lakh crore, with 24 crore pilgrims in attendance. This year, the economic impact is expected to be even larger, with several sectors reaping significant benefits. The food and beverage industry alone, encompassing packaged foods, water, biscuits, juices, and meals, is expected to contribute ₹20,000 crore to the economy. Similarly, religious offerings during the Mela are estimated to add another ₹20,000 crore.

Transportation and logistics will bring in an additional ₹10,000 crore, while tourism services and related activities are expected to contribute ₹10,000 crore as well. Furthermore, the establishment of temporary medical camps, Ayurvedic products, and medicinal supplies will add ₹3,000 crore to the overall revenue. The Maha Kumbh Mela is shaping up to be not only a religious and cultural gathering of immense significance but also an economic powerhouse for Uttar Pradesh.
