When Mahavatar Narasimha, an animated mythological drama, quietly released just a day after the high-profile Hari Hara Veeramallu, it entered theatres with little fanfare. With limited shows, no star cast, and minimal promotional activity, expectations were modest at best. Yet, in a remarkable turn of events, strong word-of-mouth transformed this underdog into a box office juggernaut.
Driven purely by its content and presentation, Mahavatar Narasimha has defied industry norms. In Hyderabad alone, the film grossed over ₹1.4 crore on its tenth day, outperforming other current releases like Kingdom, which managed under ₹98 lakh in the same span. With daily sales exceeding 11,000 tickets per hour on BookMyShow during weekends, the film’s theatrical run has been nothing short of extraordinary—especially for an animated devotional feature.
The film’s influence extends beyond its own screens. Industry observers note that the overwhelming footfalls have even helped improve collections of neighboring films, highlighting the wide-reaching impact of its success.
To date, Mahavatar Narasimha has surpassed ₹70 crore in global gross, with the ₹100 crore milestone expected to be crossed within the next week. If it maintains momentum, it is poised to become the highest-grossing Indian animated film of all time, surpassing benchmarks set by past hits like Hanuman.
Even co-producer Hombale Films has expressed surprise at the film’s staggering performance. Initially opting for a low-key release strategy, the studio is now embracing the spotlight. Director Ashwin Kumar has begun participating in interviews and media interactions as the film continues to dominate the box office.
With no major competition until the arrival of Coolie and War 2 on August 14, Mahavatar Narasimha is expected to sustain its strong run. Its success is a testament to the power of storytelling—proving that with compelling content and visual appeal, even a film without big stars can rewrite the rules of commercial cinema.
