Mahavatar Narasimha’s Success Sets Stage for Upcoming Mahavatar Films

The animated mythological film “Mahavatar Narasimha” has emerged as a massive pan-India success, grossing over ₹200 crores at the box office. Despite facing stiff competition from big releases like Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Kingdom, Coolie, and War 2, the film has continued to draw audiences over the past four weeks, solidifying its dominance in theatres.

Buoyed by this success, director Ashwin Kumar has confirmed that the next installment of the franchise, “Mahavatar Parashuram”, is scheduled to go on floors in November 2025. Meanwhile, a live-action film titled “Mahavatar”, directed by Amar Kaushik and starring Vicky Kaushal, is also in the works in Hindi cinema. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see which version will command the box office when both films release.

The Mahavatar franchise, announced by Hombale Films, is planned as an eight-part series, exploring the stories of each avatar of Lord Vishnu. The success of Mahavatar Narasimha has already raised expectations for Mahavatar Parashuram, slated for release in 2027, even before filming has begun.

On the other hand, Vicky Kaushal’s Mahavatar has been delayed from its original Christmas 2026 release, as the actor needs to undergo significant physical transformation for the role. The timing of both films releasing close to each other could set up a fascinating box-office clash, pitting the storytelling power of animation against the star appeal of a live-action feature.

While Mahavatar Narasimha has proven that compelling storytelling can outweigh star power, the reception of Vicky Kaushal’s Mahavatar will ultimately determine whether live-action can outshine its animated counterpart.
