Mahavatar Narsimha Breaks Box Office Records for Indian Animation

Animated films in India have traditionally struggled to make a mark at the box office, finding more consistent audiences through television and digital platforms. While early efforts like Hanuman (2005) and Roadside Romeo (2008) earned moderate success, they failed to spark a wider theatrical movement for Indian animation. Even globally popular titles such as Incredibles 2 and Frozen 2 saw only limited box office traction in India, with earnings just crossing the ₹50 crore mark.

That narrative, however, is now shifting—thanks to Mahavatar Narsimha, a devotional animated feature directed by Ashwin Kumar. Released across multiple languages and supported by strong family appeal, the film initially gained modest traction but saw a sharp rise in collections during its second weekend, driven by glowing word of mouth.

By the end of its second weekend, Mahavatar Narsimha crossed the ₹100 crore mark at the Indian box office—making it the first animated film, domestic or international, to achieve this feat in India.

Previously, the highest-grossing Indian animated film was Hanuman, with just over ₹10 crore, while international hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Frozen 2 had hovered around ₹50 crore. Mahavatar Narsimha has now significantly outpaced them all, setting a new benchmark for the genre.

With current trends holding strong, the film is projected to reach ₹150 crore domestically and may cross ₹200 crore worldwide. Capitalizing on this momentum, production house Hombale Films has unveiled plans for an ambitious expansion of the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, with six additional animated films slated for release through 2037.

The success of Mahavatar Narsimha could mark a turning point for Indian animation, demonstrating that large-scale animated stories rooted in Indian mythology and culture can resonate deeply with homegrown audiences. It may well inspire a new wave of investment and creativity in the animated film space across India.
