In Indian politics, it is often assumed that long-term leaders accumulate significant wealth and assets over time. However, Mamata Banerjee stands out as a striking exception to this trend.
Despite serving as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for nearly 15 years, her personal lifestyle remains remarkably simple. According to her latest election affidavit, she does not own a house, land, or even a personal car.
Her total declared assets are modest, amounting to roughly ₹15 lakh in movable assets. This includes basic savings such as cash, bank balance, and a minimal amount of gold—reportedly less than 10 grams. She also has no major investments, business interests, or significant liabilities.
Her primary sources of income are said to be book royalties and bank interest, reflecting a simple and transparent financial profile, especially for someone holding such a powerful position. Interestingly, her assets have slightly decreased compared to her previous election declaration, further reinforcing the perception that wealth accumulation has not been her priority.
In a political landscape often criticized for the rising wealth of its leaders, Mamata Banerjee’s case is notably different. Supporters view this as a sign of personal integrity and a commitment to a modest way of life, while critics may continue to debate her governance. However, when it comes to personal wealth, her record remains relatively minimal and straightforward.
