The small German town of Michendorf near Berlin was awash in festive red on Sunday, December 7, 2025, as nearly 1,000 Santa-clad runners participated in the 17th edition of the St Nicholas Run. Held annually ahead of Christmas, the event drew participants from across Germany, blending fitness, fun, and holiday cheer.
Organised by the Michendorf Running Club, the event offered multiple race categories to suit all ages and fitness levels. Adults could choose from 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km routes, while children enjoyed the special one-kilometre Zipfelmützenlauf, or “pointy hat run.” Known for its inclusive and relaxed atmosphere, the St Nicholas Run encouraged participation over competition, welcoming even those without prior athletic experience.
Michendorf’s streets came alive as residents lined the routes, cheering on runners dressed in red coats and white beards. Festive music, jingling bells, and vibrant decorations created a carnival-like ambiance, making the event a seasonal highlight for families and visitors alike. Many joined purely for fun, while others used it as a light fitness activity to kick off the winter season.
Over the years, the St Nicholas Run has grown into a beloved tradition in Brandenburg. Families return annually, children grow into regular participants, and visitors travel from afar to soak in the unique holiday atmosphere. The event also boosts local tourism, with hotels, cafés, and shops reporting increased footfall as attendees explore nearby Christmas markets and winter attractions.
With participation numbers rising steadily, organisers are considering new family-oriented activities and enhancements to further elevate the event. Their aim is to secure the St Nicholas Run as a long-standing fixture in Germany’s festive sports calendar.
As the final runners crossed the finish line, Michendorf warmly ushered in the Christmas season—celebrating community, colour, and holiday spirit.
