Microsoft Launches AI-Powered Copilot Mode in Edge

Microsoft has announced the launch of Copilot Mode, a new AI-powered feature for its Edge browser, aimed at enhancing productivity and delivering a more personalised web experience. The feature, unveiled on Monday, represents Microsoft’s latest move to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-integrated browsing tools.

Copilot Mode streamlines browsing by integrating search, navigation, and tab management into a single, cohesive interface. Users can organise their online activity around topics, compare results across multiple tabs, and complete tasks without frequent page switching. A unified input box merges chat, search, and navigation functions, while built-in voice command support allows for hands-free interactions across both Windows and macOS platforms.

“Copilot will only access browsing content when users enable it, and will provide clear visual indicators when active,” Microsoft stated. Future updates will allow users to grant additional permissions—such as access to browsing history and saved credentials—enabling Copilot to perform more complex tasks like managing bookings or handling daily errands.

The launch comes amid growing competition in the AI browser space. Nvidia-backed Perplexity AI recently debuted its own browser, Comet, while Google rolled out its “AI Mode” in Search earlier this year, reporting notable increases in user engagement. OpenAI is also reportedly developing an AI-driven browser, according to Reuters.

Copilot Mode is currently rolling out for free across supported markets and will be available for a limited time. Users retain full control and can disable the feature at any time via the Edge settings menu.
