Microsoft has unveiled its second-generation AI image generation model, MAI-Image-2, designed to produce highly realistic images with improved text rendering.
To enhance realism, Microsoft collaborated with photographers, designers, and visual storytellers during development. The model focuses on creating images with natural lighting, accurate skin tones, and lifelike environments, reducing the need for post-production edits and saving users valuable time. According to Microsoft, “MAI-Image-2 is built for creatives who want images that feel like they exist in the world… Creatives can now spend less time fixing in post-production and more time making.”
In addition to photorealism, MAI-Image-2 improves in-image text generation, producing precise text for infographics, slides, diagrams, and other visual content.
The model is currently available for preview on MAI Playground and is rolling out to Copilot and Bing Image Creator. API access is limited to select Microsoft customers for now, with wider availability planned through Microsoft Foundry for developers.
MAI-Image-2 has already ranked #3 globally among AI labs for text-to-image generation on the Arena.ai leaderboard. Microsoft faces competition from other leading AI models, including Google’s Nano Bana 2, OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, and MidJourney 6.1, as it pushes to provide high-quality, seamless visual generation for designers, marketers, and developers.
