Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of next month’s Champions Trophy due to ongoing lower back pain that has not improved sufficiently through rehabilitation. Cricket Australia (CA) announced that Marsh, who was initially named in the 15-member squad for the tournament, will miss the competition, which will take place in Pakistan and Dubai from February 19 to March 9.
According to CA, Marsh’s lower back pain had flared up in recent weeks, prompting the National Selection Panel and Australian medical team to make the decision for him to undergo a longer period of rehabilitation. While Marsh is ruled out of the Champions Trophy, reports suggest that he may also be doubtful for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
“Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy due to ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction,” CA said in a statement. “His injury has not responded well to rehabilitation, leading to the decision to give him more time to rest and recover.”
The National Selection Panel will soon meet to name a replacement for Marsh in the Champions Trophy squad. Meanwhile, the final squads for the tournament are due before February 12.
The 33-year-old all-rounder, who was signed by Lucknow Super Giants for the upcoming IPL season, will now undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation as part of his return-to-play plan. Marsh was dropped from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this month in favor of Beau Webster after a disappointing run in the series, where he struggled to make an impact with both bat and ball.
