With Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar likely to be elected to the Rajya Sabha soon, fresh speculation has begun about a possible reshuffle in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Cabinet. Political circles in New Delhi are actively discussing the possibility of a cabinet expansion in the coming weeks.
According to reports, Nitish Kumar could be inducted into the Union Cabinet and may be given the crucial Railway Ministry. Along with him, a few more leaders from the NDA alliance are also expected to find a place in the cabinet as part of the proposed expansion.
At the same time, there is talk that some senior ministers currently holding key portfolios may be moved to organisational responsibilities within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). If that happens, it could create additional vacancies in the cabinet, opening the door for more leaders from the BJP as well as its alliance partners.
Amid these developments, speculation is also growing that Andhra Pradesh could get another berth in the Union Cabinet from the NDA quota. The discussion is reportedly about allocating this berth either to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) or the Jana Sena Party.
Since the TDP already has two ministers in the Union Cabinet, there are indications that the new berth may be offered to the Jana Sena Party. Currently, Jana Sena has two Members of Parliament, and the decision on who would be nominated for the ministerial post is expected to be taken by party chief Pawan Kalyan.
Political circles are abuzz with speculation that Pawan Kalyan may recommend his brother Naga Babu for the cabinet berth at the Centre. Naga Babu is currently not a Member of Parliament; he is serving as an MLC and was earlier expected to be inducted into the Andhra Pradesh state cabinet.
However, sources suggest that Pawan Kalyan later changed his plans and began exploring the possibility of securing a Union Cabinet position for him instead. According to the speculation, Naga Babu could first be inducted into the Modi Cabinet and later be elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Four Rajya Sabha seats from Andhra Pradesh are set to fall vacant in June, and one of them may go to the Jana Sena Party as part of alliance arrangements. If that happens, Naga Babu could be nominated for that seat, which would allow him to continue as a Union minister.
Meanwhile, discussions are also underway regarding a possible reshuffle in the Andhra Pradesh state cabinet. If Naga Babu moves to the Centre, the BJP may get another ministerial berth in the state government. According to party sources, BJP MLC Somu Veerraju could be considered for induction into the state cabinet.
A final decision on both the Union Cabinet expansion and the allocation of ministerial positions for Andhra Pradesh leaders is expected in the coming weeks.
