Keerthy Suresh Opens Up About Rejecting Mahanati and Overcoming Early Career Challenge
Keerthy Suresh, one of today’s most celebrated actresses in the Indian film industry, has garnered nationwide fame. She recently ventured into Bollywood with her Hindi debut in Baby John. Interestingly, Keerthy’s rise to stardom began with the critically acclaimed Mahanati, a biopic of the legendary actress Savitri. However, few know that Keerthy initially declined the iconic role.
In a candid recent interview, Keerthy revealed that she turned down Mahanati despite a detailed four-hour narration.
“When Nagi narrated the story, I refused. The producers were enthusiastic and eager to have me on board, but I was overwhelmed with fear. Swapna and Priyanka couldn’t believe it and exclaimed, ‘How could she say no to playing Savitri amma?’ But I turned it down solely out of fear—imagine an unknown girl suddenly portraying such a legend. I worried people would say I ruined her image. That fear consumed me,” she admitted.
Keerthy further explained her initial hesitation: “I told them, ‘We’re going to showcase her personal life extensively—what if the fans don’t appreciate it? Or worse, if it’s misinterpreted?’ But Nagi’s confidence in me was unwavering, even greater than my own. It was his trust that eventually convinced me to take the leap.”
Keerthy also opened up about her early struggles in the film industry. Following her unsuccessful Tamil debut, she faced skepticism from many producers who labeled her unlucky. Additionally, she had to endure false rumors about alleged relationships with co-stars, which she firmly denied. Despite the criticism, Keerthy chose a career path that went against conventional expectations, and her resilience eventually paid off.
Her story is a testament to courage, self-belief, and the power of trusting those who believe in you even when you don’t.
