Director T.J. Gnanavel made a powerful debut with Jai Bhim, a courtroom drama that went straight to Amazon Prime Video but managed to win hearts across the country. His honest storytelling and sensitive handling of the subject brought him immense appreciation.
However, his second outing, Vettaiyaan starring Superstar Rajinikanth, did not live up to expectations. The film’s failure drew criticism, with many suggesting that Gnanavel struggled under the pressure of handling a star-driven project.
Now, the director is reportedly in talks with Mohanlal for his next film. Buzz in film circles suggests that the project could be a biopic of P. Rajagopal, the controversial founder of the Saravana Bhavan restaurant chain. Rajagopal built a global empire but was later convicted of murder in a shocking case that made national headlines. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and passed away in 2019 while serving his term.
Tentatively titled Dosa King, the film is still in the pipeline. While the subject itself is compelling, the big question is whether Gnanavel has learned from his past mistakes. With Vettaiyaan, he was criticized for forcefully adding commercial elements to please the star’s fanbase. If he collaborates with Mohanlal, the challenge will be equally intense, given the actor’s towering presence in Kerala.
For this project to succeed, Gnanavel must rely on his storytelling strengths and resist unnecessary compromises. Audiences expect authenticity, not fan service, especially with a subject as sensitive and layered as Rajagopal’s life.
