GITAM University in Visakhapatnam has once again become the focal point of an online smear campaign—this time spearheaded by YSRCP supporters. The controversy stems from a video featuring TDP MP Bharat, who also serves as the Managing Director of GITAM and is the grandson of its founder, Dr. MVVS Murthy.
In the widely circulated video, Bharat is seen addressing students and faculty at Andhra University. During his speech, he tackled ongoing political narratives accusing him of undermining Andhra University to promote GITAM. Bharat clarified, “They accused me of trying to destroy Andhra University to help GITAM grow. But we serve different groups. Andhra University offers affordable education to economically weaker students. GITAM has a higher fee structure and serves a different student base.”
He went on to praise Andhra University, noting that about 95% of its students are merit-based, while over 50% of GITAM students also earn admission on merit. His tone was balanced, respectful, and rooted in facts.
However, certain social media accounts affiliated with YSRCP twisted his words, falsely alleging that Bharat insulted underprivileged students by implying GITAM is only for the rich. These distortions appear to be a deliberate attempt to stoke class conflict and pit the two institutions against each other.
In reality, Bharat’s statements aimed to clarify institutional differences and shut down politically motivated misinformation—not to demean any group of students.
