A.R. Murugadoss’ Sikandar, featuring Salman Khan, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kajal Aggarwal, released with sky-high expectations but failed to strike gold at the box office. Though planned as a big-scale action entertainer, the film faced several challenges during production, which the director has now opened up about.
Murugadoss revealed that Sikandar was shot under unusual circumstances, as Salman Khan was facing multiple threats at the time. This forced the production to follow heavy security protocols. He was instructed to shoot only after 9 PM and mostly at indoor locations, which restricted his creative freedom and planning.
Another major obstacle was Salman’s late arrival to the sets. The actor reportedly began shooting only after 8 PM, which pushed schedules deep into the night. As a result, even daytime sequences had to be filmed against green screens, with the team relying heavily on VFX to recreate daylight — a process that stretched post-production.
“It’s not easy to shoot with Salman Khan. Even day scenes were filmed at night because he arrived late. If a scene involved kids returning from school, we still had to shoot at 2 AM. Naturally, the children were exhausted and would often doze off,” Murugadoss shared.
He also admitted that frequent script changes and on-spot suggestions from multiple people further hampered the film’s flow and storytelling. Altogether, these factors made it difficult to shape Sikandar into the film he had originally envisioned.
Looking ahead, Murugadoss has shifted focus to his upcoming pan-India project Madharasi, starring Siva Karthikeyan and Rukmini Vasanth. Scheduled for release on September 5, the film is being seen as a crucial comeback vehicle for the director after a series of setbacks.
