Naga Babu Yet to Get Cabinet Berth, YSRCP Criticizes TDP

It was on December 9, 2024, that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the candidatures of Beeda Mastan Rao, Sana Satish, and R. Krishnaiah (from BJP) for the three Rajya Sabha seats from the state. In the same statement, Naidu also stated that Jana Sena Party (JSP) general secretary Konidela Naga Babu, elder brother of party president and deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, would soon be inducted into the state cabinet.

A full year has passed since that announcement, yet there has been no move to bring Naga Babu into the cabinet. There are no indications of a cabinet expansion in the near future either. Earlier, when media asked Pawan Kalyan about Naga Babu’s induction, he said it would happen only after Naga Babu became an MLC. In March 2025, Naga Babu was elected to the State Legislative Council under the MLAs’ quota, but the cabinet berth is still awaited.

For the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which has been struggling to find political ammunition against TDP and its allies, Naga Babu’s non-induction has become an opportunity to criticize Naidu. On Tuesday, YSRCP’s media arm “Sakshi” revisited Naidu’s year-old statement, calling the denial of a cabinet berth to Naga Babu a “pacha potu” (yet another instance of backstabbing), despite the Jana Sena Party’s crucial role in securing a consolidated mandate in 2024.

Reports suggest that even Pawan Kalyan is in a tight spot, unable to pressure Naidu either to induct Naga Babu into the cabinet or secure him a Rajya Sabha seat. Sakshi appears to be using this situation to highlight potential internal discomfort within the coalition.
