Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday handed over cheques to the 24 bereaved families who lost their dear ones in the Beas river tragedy in June. Although the students and their families hail from Telangana, Naidu took initiative and helped the families. The mishap took place on 8 June 2014 evening, where 24 students (6 female, 18 male 2nd year engineering students) and a tour operator from VNR Vignana Jyothi Engineering College drowned in Beas river at Himalayas.
After massive man hunt all bodies of 24 students were recovered by July 21 but the body of tour operator Prahlad is still missing. Soon after the tragic incident, Naidu was the first to respond and oversaw the rescue operations. He even spoke to Himachal CM and sent his own team to coordinate the operations.
He had announced Rs 5 Lakh exgratia for each bereaved family and lived up to his promise. He had already given exgratia for a family soon after the incident then and now he handed over cheques for remaining 24 families. With this Naidu yet again proved that his heart is in right place and he is not politician but a statesman.
