For the past several months, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been regularly reviewing the performance of his party MLAs. Using periodic IVRS surveys, party intelligence inputs, and state intelligence reports, Naidu has been assessing public perception, participation in government programmes, and overall effectiveness of his legislators.
In these reviews, Naidu has not hesitated to pull up underperforming MLAs—both collectively and individually—while suggesting corrective measures. On several occasions, he has even warned that non-performers would not be given tickets in the next elections.
In contrast, Jana Sena Party (JSP) president and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has made no similar moves to review or monitor his party’s MLAs. Political analysts believe the difference stems from intent—while Naidu is determined to return to power on his own strength, Pawan has publicly stated that Andhra Pradesh should remain under the TDP-led alliance for the next 15 years. This, observers say, signals no ambition to capture power independently.
This stance has reportedly left JSP cadre frustrated. Many believe that Pawan’s commitment to a long-term alliance sidelines Jana Sena’s growth as an independent political force. Party insiders say that while he speaks about coalition unity, his lack of direct engagement with JSP MLAs is a growing concern.
Naidu has advised Pawan to focus more on strengthening his party by holding regular performance reviews with his 21 MLAs, ensuring they are re-elected in the next polls. However, this advice has also fueled the perception that Pawan operates under Naidu’s political shadow.
Adding to the criticism is Pawan’s limited interaction with his legislators since assuming office, despite some facing serious corruption allegations—similar to those against certain TDP MLAs. Unlike Naidu, Pawan has not issued warnings or taken visible action against them.
Political observers are now watching closely to see if Pawan will heed Naidu’s advice and call for a review meeting with JSP MLAs. Whether such a move will change public perception of his leadership remains to be seen.
