The free sand policy being implemented by the Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh has failed to yield desired results. On the other hand, it is leading to sand mafia and the very purpose of the sand policy is defeated.
This was the opinion expressed by real estate developments in Andhra, who are facing severe sand crisis for their constructions.
According to CREDAI Visakhapatnam chapter chairman GVVS Narayana, after the announcement of policy of free sand supply, the cost of the sand per truck load came down to Rs. 12,000 from Rs 35,000.
But the sand mafia has again came in action and the costs have gone up to around Rs. 25,000 per truck load, he said.He pointed out that the mafia was obstructing the transportation of sand between Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam.
The government needs to take prompt action to curb the activities of sand mafia, as it has started hampering construction work in the State, which is also affecting the government housing programmes, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, he said.
